Christmas markets are a winter tradition. Getting you in the festive spirit, it doesn’t feel like the holidays until you’re strolling the streets, bundled up in a scarf, admiring the beautiful stalls. Oxford is a beautiful city at all times of year, but there’s something about winter that makes it even more magical. Our boutique hotel shares what makes Oxford’s Christmas markets more special than anywhere else in the world.

Our unique, historic setting

The storied streets of Oxford have a rich and vibrant history. The ancient architecture of our town complements twinkling festive lights perfectly, transporting you to a winter wonderland. Unlike larger towns, Oxford’s market has a much more welcoming and community feel, making for a warm and intimate visit. We didn’t earn the name The City of Dreaming Spires for nothing; welcome to the Christmas village of your dreams.

Talented local sellers

Featuring stalls from expert businesses in and around Oxfordshire, the market is the ideal place to discover something one of a kind. We’re extremely lucky to be home to many talented artists, bakers, makers, and craftspeople. Displaying a large range of unique gifts and treats, you’ll finally find the perfect present for your awkward relatives! Save some pennies to get yourself an ornate bauble, delicious cheese, or a handmade candle.

Brass bands and choirs fill the air with music

Every year, university colleges and local groups gather their gifted voices together to bring joy to the market. Brass bands perform traditional carols in perfect synchronisation, full of nostalgia and festivity. Lifting spirits in a cheerful chorus, feel free to watch or sing along. Although not yet announced, in past years the talented community choir Handy Voices have treated visitors to their sign language performance. A true joy to experience.

Freshly made food and drink

Everyone needs sustenance for shopping, and Oxford is happy to provide. Expect your Christmas market staples like bratwurst and mulled wine to really get you in the mood. If you’re looking to try something more local, sample succulent hog roasts or mouth-watering loaded fries. Sweet treats come in the form of warm churros, fresh out of the fryer. Our best advice would be to sample as much as possible, even if it means sharing.

The beautiful vintage carousel

Every year, Broad Street plays host to another Christmas staple: an intricately decorated carousel. In the traditional Victorian style, this is the perfect ride for kids of all ages to enjoy. Even if you decide not to step aboard, it’s an amazing photo opportunity! Our favourite time to visit is at night, when the lights are switched on and everything is bathed in a glittering light. Watch the horses ride in circles around the glowing centre, overlooked by an impressive Christmas tree.

Oxford Christmas Market is taking place from the 9-19th December 2021. Having not taken place in 2020, this year is set to be the most amazing market to date. To make your trip even more special, why not make a weekend of it? Discover our special offers, and make your season sparkle.
